Suggested edit: Published in the Athens Review March 25, 1943 J.T. Hickman, 13 year old son of Mr. and Mrs. H.T. Hickman of the Sampson community, route 2, Athens, succumbed Sunday afternoon about 6 o'clock in a local hospital to an accidental gunshot wound received while he and two companions were returning to the J.N. Splawn Sr. home in the Ash Switch community from a rabbit hunt on the Bishop place adjoining the Athens Fish and Game Club Lake. the accident occurred about 5 o'clock. The charge, from a 12 gauge shotgun in the hands of James N. Splawn Jr., who was walking beside Hickman and about five or six feet from him, struck the youth in the left side just below the ribs. Splawn said that the gun, which he was carrying under his left arm went off when he raised it to exchange it to the other arm. "Jim, I'm gone, " Splawn quoted young Hickman as saying when the injured youth fell to the ground. The third youth, James Boyd, who was walking a short distance ahead of the two boys, went to the home of A.L. Pierce for assistance, and Mr. and Mrs. Pierce brought the injured boy to the Wolfe-Duphorne Hospital here. Mrs. Pierce said that young Hickman talked all the way to town, and kept repeating, "Jim, you can't help it." The two youths, Hickman and Splawn, had been together since Saturday, Hickman having stayed overnight in the Splawn home. They met in Athens Saturday afternoon. Sheriff Jess Sweeten said that the two boys spent the morning Sunday riding horses, and decided to go hunting in the afternoon. Young Hickman was born on June 20, 1929, on the John Faulk place in this county, and had resided on the Jane McCool place in the Sampson community all of his life, with the exception of a few months. Surviving are his parents, Mr. and Mrs. H.T. Hickman; four sisters, Ruby, Barbara Mae, Nevie Ruth and Edna Jene; and two brothers, James Ishmael and Robert Paul, all of the Sampson community. Funeral services will be held Monday afternoon at 4 o'clock at the grave in the Davis cemetery. The services will be conducted by the Rev. John Duckett, pastor of the Fundamental Baptist Church, with the Carroll and Lehr Funeral Home in charge. Contributor: Wayne Smith
