Bio

Helen Welfel, 96, passed away October 5, 2023. Helen was born March 15, 1927 in Moulton, TX to the late Frank and Annie Culak. She was a talented seamstress and made countless quilts for her grandchildren. She enjoyed spending time with her family and always looked forward to the special big hugs from her great-grandson, Madden Schoener. Helen also enjoyed playing bingo, lottery, slot machines, dancing and cooking. She is survived by her sons, Ronald Welfel (Beth) of New Braunfels, Kenneth Welfel (Helen) of Fulsher, Calvin Welfel (Debbie) of Victoria and daughter, Carolyn Schoener (Norman) of Victoria. She also leaves behind grandchildren, Tammy (Norman), Karl (Teri), Michael (Stacey), John (Melinda), Kevin (Christina), Justin, Jeffrey, Jamie (Edward), and Lacey (Travis). She also leaves behind 17 great-grandchildren and bonus great-grandchildren and great-great grandchildren to cherish her memory. She is preceded in death by her parents; husband of 69 years, Oscar Joe Welfel; sister, Mary Ann Whited; twin brothers, Adolph and Ruben Culak and grandchildren, Aaron and Corey Welfel. A visitation for family and friends will be Thursday, October 12, 2023 from 5-6 pm at Rosewood Funeral Chapel. A rosary will be recited, Friday, October 13, 2023 at 9:30 am at Our Lady of Lourdes Catholic Church with Mass to follow at 10 am. Burial will immediately follow at Memory Gardens Cemetery. Pallbearers are Madden Schoener, Edward Moreno, Travis Falls, Donald Jirkovsky, Karl Welfel, Michael Welfel and Kevin Welfel. Honorary pallbearers are Helen's granddaughters, great-grandchildren, Angela Cox (John) and St. Michael's Prayer Warriors. A special thank you to the caregivers at The Dover House for the love and care given to Helen throughout the years. Memorial donations may be made to Our Lady of Lourdes Catholic Church or Crown Hospice.
