Bio

JANESVILLE — Viola M. Nelson, 92, a longtime Janesville resident, passed away early Saturday morning, May 27, 2006, at Cedar View Health Center. She was born on Oct. 18, 1913, in Viborg, SD, daughter of the late Jacob and Phena (Fjelsbro) Vetos. On June 26, 1931, she married Richard T. Nelson in Alcester, SD. He preceded her in death on Dec. 10, 1999. Both had grown up in farm families, a lifestyle they continued together until 1949 when they sold their land and moved into the small town of Beresford, SD, where they lived and worked until moving to Janesville in 1953. Viola was employed by the Kennedy Rexall Drug Store, JCPenney, Elliott's Dress Shop, and Amphenol Manufacturing until her retirement. She was a very active member of First Lutheran Church. As a lifelong enthusiastic and proficient needlework hobbyist, the most important part of her church activities was devoting her talent and efforts assisting the First Lutheran Church Ladies Sewing Group in making quilts and many other craft items for missions and the Ladies Aid annual bazaar. Over many years a particularly pleasing task was crocheting hundreds of winter stocking caps for the Salvation Army's "Coats for Kids" program, as well as dozens of lap robes for nursing home residents, friends, and family. She is survived by her son, Melvin (Patricia) Nelson of Naples, FL; her daughter, Clarice (Robert) Will of Janesville; her five grandchildren; 11 great-grandchildren; 4 great-great-grandchildren; nieces, nephews, and friends. In addition to her husband and parents, she was preceded in death by 7 brothers: Stanley, Arthur, Selmer, Raymond, Norris, Lloyd, and George; 2 sisters who died at birth; and by a great-granddaughter, Allison Will. Funeral services will be held on Wednesday, May 31, 2006, at FIRST LUTHERAN CHURCH CHAPEL, 612 N. Randall Ave., with Rev. Jim Melvin officiating. Burial will take place in Milton Lawns Memorial Park. Friends may call on Wednesday the CHURCH. The WHITCOMB-LYNCH-ALBRECHT FUNERAL HOME, JANESVILLE, is assisting her family with arrangements. The Janesville Gazette Tuesday May 30, 2006
