Bio
William VanderKooi, age 92 of Lynden, went to be with his Lord at St. Joseph Hospital on Thursday, August 2. Born in Hull, Iowa on November 21, 1914, he grew up there and married Grace VanRoekel on June 26, 1939. From Iowa, Bill and Grace moved to San Francisco in 1942 where he worked in the shipyards during World War II. In 1945 they moved to Alameda, California where he worked as a foreman for a lumber company until his retirement in 1980. While in Alameda, Mr. VanderKooi was a member of the Alameda Christian Reformed Church where he served on the church council and on the Board of the Alameda Christian School. In 1980, he and Grace moved to Lynden and became members of the Third Christian Reformed Church and where served as an Elder. Bill also did volunteer work for Project Hope and the Lynden Christian Schools. He was also an avid fan of Lynden Christian athletics. Mr. VanderKooi was preceded in death by his parents and sisters, Agnes Wortman, Sally Timmer and Josie VanBerkum and is survived by his wife Grace; daughter Linda (Harlan) Kredit of Lynden; son Ben (JoAnn) VanderKooi of Sammamish, WA., grandchildren Tim (Lisa) Kredit and children Rachel and Eric; Kim (Micah) Moses, Karen (Chris) Rast and son Collin, Clint (Kathy) VanderKooi and children Matthew and Amber, and Jill (Sean) Knudson; brother James (Velma) VanderKooi of Hull, Iowa; sister Gertrude (Gene) Scholten of George, Iowa; sisters-in-law, Hendrene Alsum and Doris Johnson, and numerous other relatives. Funeral services will be conducted on Saturday, August 4, at 10 am in the Chapel of Gillies Funeral Home, 202 Front St, Lynden, with Rev. Dick Vriesman and Rev. Tom Kok officiating. Private burial will precede in Monumenta Cemetery. Memorials in Bill's name may be made to the Lynden Christian Schools, 417 Lyncs Dr., Lynden, WA 98264. -Obituary from Gillies Funeral Home.
