Herald Banner October 17, 2008 Marjorie Athey Marjorie Athey, 76, of Greenville died Oct. 15, 2008, at Hunt Regional Medical Center. Services will be at 1 p.m. Saturday in Ridgecrest Baptist Church under the direction of Coker-Mathews Funeral Home. Rev. Mark Groom will officiate. Burial will follow in Memoryland Memorial Park. Visitation is from 6 to 8 p.m. today at the funeral home. The daughter of Jessie and Opal Smith Groom, she was born Sept. 15, 1932, in Canton. On June 29, 1950, she married Richard Athey in Mabank. Marjorie graduated from Liberty University with a major in biblical studies. She retired from E-Systems in 1992. She was a member of Ridgecrest Baptist Church and belonged to the Business and Professional Women's Organization and the Northeast Texas Music Organization. She served as president of the local AARP and volunteered with the American Cancer Society for many years. Marjorie had a number of hobbies and interests, but her greatest passion was singing. Surviving are sons Chris Athey and wife Paula of Huntsville and Keith Athey and wife Debbie of Austin; a daughter, Kim Bishop and husband Jeff of Commerce; brothers J.O. "Sonny" Groom of Lynchburg, Va., and James Groom of Farmersville; sisters Alene Harris of Mabank and Joyce Shirley and Brenda Gilmer of Greenville; six grandchildren; one great-grandchild; and other extended family and friends.. She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband in 1994; a daughter, Kathy Baldwin in 2008; and a brother, Kenneth Groom.
