Elmer Frank Green, a resident of Harper, Texas since 1994, was born in the family home on County Road west of Checotah, Oklahoma on January 31, 1925. His family's farm was on one side of the road. His grandparents lived in Indian territory on the other side. He arrived to the challenge of two big brothers, and three older sisters. With that beginning, Elmer was well primed to take on all the challenges of the next 98 years. He passed to a new challenge in his family home on Tuesday, February 14, 2023. Elmer's early life was framed by the 'dust bowl' days. His family, as did many others, lost their crops and then their home. His father traded the family milk cow for a Model T flatbed truck to move the family to East Texas where relatives lived who could give them a place to land as they rebuilt their lives. 6 yr old Elmer made the trip riding on top of a chicken coop tied to the rear of the truck. That six-year-old grew to be 6'3" tall. And along the way he discovered that each day was made interesting by the challenges he chose to accept. It might be the decision to taunt the bull in the pasture by pawing the ground, or taking his favorite dog hunting. At the end of WWII while stationed in San Francisco, he met and married Charlotte, a WAC who enjoyed riding horses as much as he did. They were together for 66 years of challenges and adventures. As a teenager, Elmer's greatest desire was to build a car. He translated that mechanical aptitude into a lifetime in the oil industry with the Western Company, a well-servicing company, maintaining the trucks, establishing new maintenance departments as the company expanded, and ultimately overseeing the maintenance division in the mountain region of the company. Life has a way of shunting you off on a side trail and then, if you are blessed, returning you to your dreams. In the beginning Elmer and Charlotte planned to homestead in Alaska. They didn't make it north, but Elmer did purchase property to raise some cattle and horses. And the two would follow a trail through the San Juan Mtns of Colorado just to see what the end looked like. There was opportunity to teach young ones, grandchildren as well as children, to fish, hunt, ride and love the earth. And to explore the United States. Each trip or move across the country was treated as an adventure and an opportunity to expand our knowledge of the universe. Elmer is survived by three of their five children: Denise Arlene Green Coulter; David Lester Green; and Barbara Marie Green Gosnell. Twelve grandchildren: Sean Stuart Coulter, Jennifer Carleen Coulter, Craig Ryan Coulter, Adana Rae Green Elder, Alrica Rebecca Green Goldstein, Kevin Earl Green, David Brian Gosnell, Travis Lee Gosnell, Christopher Aaron Gosnell, Jeffrey Paul Gosnell, Carrie Marie Green Wimmer, Krista Renee Green Sessink; 17 great-grandchildren; and numerous nieces and nephews. The Elmer Green family lived in Aztec, New Mexico where the younger children graduated from Aztec High School between 1965 - 1994. In 1994 Elmer and Charlotte moved to Harper, Texas. Within his immediate family, Elmer was preceded in death by his wife, Charlotte Isobelle; and two sons, Richard Earl Green, and Ronald Frank Green.
