Bio

Leona Harper was born in Cooke County, Texas. She was four years old when her mother died in 1895. There was a total of six children in the family. It's unknown when the father and six children moved to Orr, in Indian Territory, but they were there in 1900--all living in separate households in the town. In June of 1900 Leona and three of her sisters were back in Cooke County (Gainesville) living with their maternal grandmother and an aunt and her family. The grandmother died in 1905 and the four girls were moved back to Orr. By 1920 five of the six Harper children were married and living at Orr. Nothing is known about the location of the sixth Harper child, Myrtle, after 1900. When Leona and Claud Rickets were married in 1907 the marriage license shows her maiden name as McCall. When her sister Beulah married Dr. Thomas Gross in 1911 she, also, was shown with the maiden name McCall. The reason for this anonymally is a complete mystery.
