OLE NELSON OF THIS CITY AND SON, DAVID NELSON, MISSING SINCE TUESDAY. -START TO CROSS ICE- When Last Seen Both Were Headed For Long Point, Walking Past Villa Maria Academy--Searching Parties Dragging Lake--Ice Considered Very Unsafe. Ole Nelson. aged about 65 years, A residing on Bluff Street, and his son, David Nelson, 29 years old, a farmer living near Maiden Rock. have been missing since Tuesday noon and it is feared both met death by drowning in Lake Pepin. David Nelson crossed the ice on Lake Pepin on Monday from Maiden Rock to Frontenac. He and his father left Red Wing Tuesday noon for Frontenac, intending to cross the lake again. They boarded a freight train here and got off at Frontenac. They carried a suit case, a cross-cut saw and an ax. It was the father's intention to help his son with work on the farm. They stopped at the Frontenac store and made a few purchases and when last seen were walking past the Villa Maria Academy toward Long Point. A farmer living near the Villa reported that he had seen two men, answering their description headed toward the lake early in the afternoon Tuesday. Police Notified. They were not reported missing until yesterday noon, when Mrs. David Nelson telephoned from Maiden Rock to her brother-in-law, Paul Nelson, employed at the Red Wing Laundry. He asked the police to assist him in the search for the missing men. Chief Jackson and R. L. C. Gelb went to Frontenac in the afternoon and they learned that the two men reached Frontenac and started out to cross the lake. The ice at this point was found to be very unsafe and the officers did not venture very far out into lake as the thin coating began to crack under their weight. Today Paul Nelson and a party of friends are continuing the search and as the lake is open in many places, boats have been pressed into use. ChiefJackson said this morning that there is a bare possibility the two men passed over the main channel safely and that they broke through the ice in still water, and that their bodies may be recovered. Coroner Geib is assisting the search. Red Wing Republican 10 Dec 1915, Page 1
