Sioux Falls, SD ~ Marie Esther Gordon, age 89, formerly of Mitchell, SD, died on Saturday, January 7, 2023 surrounded by her loving children, at Ava's House by Sanford Health in Sioux Falls, SD. Funeral Mass of Christian Burial will be 10:30 AM on Thursday, January 12, 2023 at St. Michael Catholic Church in Sioux Falls with burial at American Legion Cemetery in Mitchell, SD. Marie Esther Herrmann was born on March 18, 1933 in Dimock, SD to Henry and Mary (Puetz) Herrmann. She was raised on farms near Mitchell, SD and received her education in country schools until attending and graduating from Plano High School. Following high school, Marie moved to Rapid City, SD to live with her sister. While working at JC Penney in Rapid City, she found the love of her life in Robert LeRoy Gordon. The couple were united in marriage on January 6, 1954 in Rapid City. Shortly after they were married JC Penney transferred Robert to North Dakota. While living in Williston, Minot and Bismarck, Marie and Robert were blessed with three sons, Jeff, Brad and Terry. The family then moved back to Rapid City, SD where they welcomed a fourth son, Tracy. In 1962, the family made their home in Mitchell, SD where Marie and Robert were delighted with a daughter, Ann. Robert passed away in 2005 and Marie made her home in Sioux Falls, SD in 2009. Marie worked for many years at Bennett's Market (County Fair Food Store) in Mitchell, SD. Although she would consider her passion in life was to care for her family and her community. She was a founding member of Holy Spirit Catholic Church in Mitchell and a parishioner of St. Michael's Catholic Church in Sioux Falls as well as a strong supporter of Catholic education. She instilled the importance of nightly dinner with her family without distractions and to be gracious and kind, always thinking to put the needs of others above her own. She had a quick wit and great sense of humor and loved sending birthday and holiday cards to three generations of her family (never missing a birthday or event.) Marie found enjoyment in tending to her garden, baking and reading. Above all, she loved and cherished her family. Marie was a loving wife, mother, grandmother, great grandmother, sister, aunt and friend who will be dearly missed.
