Bio

Dr. Sarah Joy McKenzie (Senter) passed peacefully on December 7, 2022, at the age of 87. She was born on December 13, 1934, in the small country town of Tennessee Colony. Dr. McKenzie moved to the city to earn an education, raised a family in Friendswood, Texas, and returned to the country to be with her family. Dr. McKenzie earned 4 degrees, including a Bachelors degree, 2 Masters degrees and a Doctorate of Education from the University of Houston. She taught and inspired countless students through the years from elementary age to college, and eventually retired as a college professor. She was a pioneer and trailblazer while working for the Department of Technology with the Houston ISD . Dr. McKenzie balanced her career with her most important job as a mother. Additionally, Dr. McKenzie was an advocate for those who were less fortunate, an early feminist, and mentor for single parents struggling to return to school. She was preceded in death by her parents, Ernest and Mary Lou McKenzie, brother, Clayton McKenzie, and sisters, Geraldine Ingram and Ernestine Winkel. Dr. McKenzie is survived by her children, Sheree Sanders, Carol Senter Kmiec, Stephen Senter and wife Susan, and Aven Senter and wife Adriana. She is also survived by her grandchildren, Shelby Sanders, Jackson Senter, Caroline Senter, Clayton Senter, and Pearl Senter, and her great granddaughter Savannah Smith. Graveside service is scheduled for 2:00 p.m. Wednesday, December 14, 2022, at the Tennessee Colony Cemetery under the direction of Herrington / Land of Memory Funeral Home.
