Arvilla Gaines June 4, 1928 - June 29, 2016 Resident of San Jose Born in Rockville, Nebraska, to Vince and Ruth Suchanek, Arvilla was the oldest of five children, with sisters Dolly Rogers and Marlene Weldon, and brothers Rey and Lonnie Suchanek. Her family moved to Ord, Nebraska where she graduated from Ord High in 1945. She first married in 1946, and raised three sons, Mark, Joel, and David Auble while attending Kearney State Teachers College, Nebraska. She completed credentials in 1956 and earned a BA in Education in 1961. Arvilla began teaching in Kearney, later moving to Stockton and San Jose, California to follow her career. She married Floyd Gaines in Los Gatos in 1966. In 1976 Arvilla earned a Masters Degree in Ed from the University of San Francisco. Arvilla was a remarkable teacher and leader. She inspired her students, engaged their parents, and was admired by her colleagues. At San Jose's Union School District, she developed special education programs for challenged and gifted students, and she implemented individualized instruction. She led several professional organizations, serving as Vice President of the Stockton Elementary Teachers' Association, President of the Union District Educators' Association, President of Women in Education, and officer of the Santa Clara County Women Leaders in Education. Arvilla retired from teaching in 1984, but did not rest on her laurels. She and Floyd remodeled their homes and refurbished antiques. They travelled extensively. She was an accomplished Contract Bridge player. And most importantly, she was a "fun grandma" and an endless source of love and support for two generations of grandkids. The Gaines home became a gathering place for the Auble and Gaines clans as the children grew up and became parents. Arvilla is survived by her sisters, Dolly Rogers and Marlene Weldon, husband Floyd Gaines, sons Mark Auble, Joel Auble, and David (Kathy) Auble, stepson Bill (Lynn) Gaines and stepdaughter Gloria (Jack) Anderson, and seventeen grandchildren and great grandchildren.
