Bio

Dean Adolph Behne November 9, 1930 - August 11, 2022 Dean Adolph Behne, 91, of DeWitt, Nebraska, passed away on Aug. 11, 2022, in Greeley, Colorado. The Recitation of The Rosary will be held Friday, Oct. 7, 2022 at 10 a.m. with a Mass of Christian Burial following at 10:30 a.m. at St. Wenceslaus Church in Wilber, Nebraska. Private family graveside services will follow at the Wilber Czech Cemetery. Dean was born on Nov. 9, 1930, to George and Mary (Liska) Behne in Brainard, Nebraska. Dean was raised on the family farm and was the youngest of three brothers. Dean graduated from Dwight High School in 1948. After high school, he continued to work on the family farm until he enlisted in the Army in 1953. He was stationed in Germany with the 40th Transportation Company. He was awarded the Sharp Shooter Medal, National Defense Service Medal, Army of Occupation Medal and Good Conduct Medal. He was honorably discharged in 1955 but remained with the Army Standby Reserve until 1961. After his military service, Dean returned to the family farm. Then in 1956, he met the love of his life, Mavis Synovec. They were united in marriage on Aug. 2, 1958, at St. Mary's Cathedral Church in Lincoln, Nebraska. They resided in Lincoln for two years as Dean went to work for American Stores beef packing plant as a meat cutter. It was during this time that their daughter Susan was born. Six months later, they moved to Greeley where Dean went to work for Monfort of Colorado as a meat cutter. While living in Greeley, two more daughters were born to his union, Deann and Staci. Dean worked hard to provide for his family including side jobs as a painter, roofer, remodeler and he would also stack hay for farmers in the area. He passed on his strong work ethic to his daughters and grandchildren. Dean retired from Monfort in 1992 after 32 years with the company. Even in retirement he continued to work on projects for family and friends. He was mechanically inclined and could fix anything he set his mind to. He was a perfectionist and took pride in his work. In 1996, his life changed forever when Mavis passed away. He moved back to the family farm in DeWitt and started many renovation projects. Being on the farm was going back to his roots where he loved the country way of life. Dean enjoyed working in his yard and garden, driving his Farmall tractor, tinkering in his shop, listening to polka music, visiting with family and friends and having a cold beer after a hard day's work. He never met a stranger and would do anything for anyone. He loved his grandchildren and enjoyed teaching them how to drive the tractor and they looked forward to helping him with odd jobs around the farm. He was most proud of the young adults they became with families of their own. Dean will always be remembered as a strong and honest man, a devoted husband, a loving dad to his daughters and a proud grandpa to his grandchildren and great-grandchildren. He is loved dearly and will be missed beyond measure. Dean is survived by his daughters, Susan Chesnut (Kevin) of Omaha and Deann Behne of Greeley, Colorado; his grandchildren, Ashley Klingemann (Ben) of Omaha, Trevor Chesnut (Mikayla Kreider) of Scottsbluff, Tyler Chesnut (Michelle) of Omaha and Jeffrey Chesnut (Kylie) of Omaha; great-grandchildren, John and Jack Klingemann, Charlotte Chesnut and Calloway Chesnut; sisters-in-law, Shirley Synovec of DeWitt, Genevieve Behne of Brainard and Doris Behne of Hawaii; and many nieces, nephews and friends. He is preceded in death by his loving wife, Mavis; his daughter, Staci Behne; his parents, George and Mary Behne; his brothers, Ernest Behne, George Behne and Donald Behne; sisters-in-law, Martha Behne and Norma Waltermire; brothers-in-laws Marvin Synovec and Noah Waltermire; and in-laws, Frank and Tillie Synovec. Since Dean was an avid Husker fan and he followed the Denver Broncos//Nuggets and Colorado Rockies, the family requests casual attire of jeans and boots to honor his country roots or sports apparel in support of Dean's favorite teams.
