Bio

ETHEL CAROLINE FLAKUS ROADMAN Ethel Roadman, a 35 year resident of Vancouver, WA, died peacefully and in the presence of family on March 8th, 2005 at the Waterford Assisted Living Facility. Ethel was born to Henry and Carrie Flakus in Elyria, Nebraska on April 3, 1922. After teaching school for two years in South Dakota, she joined other family members who had moved to Vancouver to work in the Kaiser shipyards. In 1942, she met and married Charles Roadman, an Army radio operator, and the couple moved back East to Chuck's home in Pennsylvania. When Chuck died seventeen years and six children later, Ethel packed up the kids and returned to Vancouver, once again joining her family. She worked for the V.A. Hospital until she retired. Ethel is preceded in death by her son, Mark, and by longtime friend, Harold Nelson. Ethel and Harold traveled throughout the U.S., Mexico and Canada in their motorhome. Judging by the photos and tall tales, they had a blast. Ethel is survived by brother, Robert Flakus; sisters, Carolyn Kerr and Luella Oesterle; sons David, Bill and Tom (T.J.); daughters, Carolyn Longphre and Bethellen (Elizabeth) Hudson; eight grandchildren; one great-grandchild and another on the way. Ethel also leaves behind dear friends, Valerie Roadman and Stanley Bjorum. Ethel was known and loved for her vitality. She danced, golfed, fished, played bridge and any other card game you might suggest. She was a member of the American Legion Auxiliary and Holy Rosary Society. Most of all, Ethel was a matriarch, the life of the party, and the centerpiece of many lives. Memorial Services will be held Saturday, April 30th at 3 PM at Evergreen Memorial Gardens. Please join the family for a celebration of Ethel¹s life at the American Legion Post #14 immediately following. Contributions may be made to Hospice, whose help and dedication to Ethel was so greatly appreciated. The Columbian (Vancouver, WA) - Apr 17 2005
