Nels Mortenson December 3, 1937 - December 9, 2021 Nels G. Mortenson, age 84, of Ogema, MN., passed away, December 9, 2021, at home, under the care of the Red River Valley Hospice, surrounded by his daughters and niece, Jackie. Nels Gene Mortenson, was born December 3, 1937, in Ogema, to Nels and Bessie (Matejka) Mortenson. He grew up and attended school in Ogema. Nels joined the Armed Services in 1961, obtaining sharpshooter/marksman designation, and served overseas in Korea. On September 26, 1964, Nels was united in marriage to Karen Beaupre, in White Earth, MN. They lived in Ogema, where they raised their three daughters. Nels worked various construction jobs and for local farmers, before beginning employment with the Canadian Pacific Railway (Soo Line), in 1968. He worked with the railroad for 30 years and retired as a track inspector on November 27, 1997. After his retirement, Nels kept busy with woodworking, baking, fishing, hunting, gardening, and spending time with friends and family. He enjoyed their home on White Earth Lake and taking his grandkids fishing. He devoted much of his spare time volunteering with Ogema Community Club and being an active member in the Ogema VFW. Nels was member of the honor guard performing the gun salute for Memorial Day services and military funerals. He also spent many years as a volunteer fireman. Family members who survive Nels, include his children: Marlene (Mark) Kelly of Cotuit, MA., Paula (Adam) Rockstad of East Grand Forks, MN., and Rebecca Mortenson of Marston Mills, MA.; grandchildren: Crystal Gunderson, Ryan Rockstad, Tyler Kelly, Liam Kelly, Sean Kelly, Jakob Gifford; and great-grandchildren: Joseph Allen and Violet Pilkington; and many nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his wife; parents; and siblings: Clyde Mortenson, Ruby Gorne, Arlene Griffith, Georgie Towles, Marion Cable, Lavina Zima, and Lorraine Hinshaw. The family would like to thank White Earth Home Health and Red River Valley Hospice, for their compassionate services. A Memorial Service will be held at 10:30 a.m., on Thursday, December 16, 2021, at Anderson Family Funeral Home, in Mahnomen. A Time of Gathering will be held Wednesday, December 15th, from 5:00 – 7:00 p.m., at the funeral home. Inurnment and Military Honors will be held at the Ogema City Cemetery.
