Published in The Sierra Vista Herald (February 10, 2019): SIERRA VISTA–Georgena Nelsie (Mortenson) Towles passed away peacefully on February 4, 2019, in Sierra Vista, Arizona. She was a loving wife, mother, grandmother, great-grandmother, sister, aunt, neighbor, and friend. She was born on February 22, 1930, in Ogema, Minnesota, to Nels Mortenson and Bessie Matejka. She was one of 8 children. Georgena is survived her loving husband of 54 years, James; 2 sons, Ronald (Marina) and Michael (Paula); 5 grandchildren, Ruben (Melissa) Schaefer, Audrey (Derrick) Hensley, Saige Arce, Seath Towles, and Maya Saroff; 3 great-grandchildren, Nia Olivas, Julia Schaefer. and William Schaefer; a sister, Marion Cable; a brother, Nels Mortenson; and many nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her mother and father; sisters, Lavina Zima, Ruby Gorne, Arlene Griffith, and Lorraine Hinshaw; and a brother, Clyde Mortenson. Throughout her life, she remained lovingly committed to her family and was guided by her strong Christian faith. Georgena was the sweetest and kindest person and the grandmother everyone wished they had. She always had a new game to play or a creative craft to make. She was a very talented woman and excelled in so many activities that included cooking, baking, sewing, painting, gardening, bowling and spoiling her grandkids. She had a great appreciation for wildlife and wildflowers. For several years she even had a "pet" one-legged roadrunner named Buddy. She loved to laugh, tell silly jokes, and enjoyed an occasional glass of wine. Her family will forever miss her kindness and unwavering support. We take solace in the knowledge that she is reunited with our Creator and her loving family and friends who have gone before her. A private memorial will be held at a later date.
