He moved to San Augustine County, Texas, with his parents in 1835, and to Hopkins County, Texas, before 1850. He married Sarah E. Strother in Hopkins County on August 14, 1856. He and his brother William Marshall Ewing were engaged in the Mercantile Business at Tarrant, Hopkins, Texas, from 1856 to 1862. When Texas seceded from the Union he joined the Confederate Army and was mustered into Captain Joseph A. Moore's Company, Precinct 6, Hopkins County, Texas, August 6, 1861 for active service. He was stationed at Camp Caren Crow, Louisiana, during most of his service. When he returned from the army he engaged in stock raising and farming, he was elected a County Commissioner on June 25, 1866. He was a Master Mason and member of Tarrant Lodge No. 91. He and his wife Sarah had ten children.
