OBITUARY- The Monitor Herald, Aug. 25, 1938 Mrs. Ernest Smith is Death Victim, Succumbs at Home Near City Thursday Night-Burial at Gauley Friday Afternoon Mrs. Sammie G. Smith, wife of Mr. Ernest Smith, of just west of Calhoun City, died on Thursday night, Aug 18th. Funeral services were held at Gauley church on Friday afternoon, conducted by Rev. Geo. C. Lee, with interment in the cemetery there. Pryor Funeral Home had charge of funeral arrangements. Mrs. Smith was a fine christian woman. She was known as an excellent neighbor and as a useful and considerate friend. Her husband, a World War Veteran, and one of the best citizens of the community, is also well known over the county. Besides her husband, she is survived by her parents, Mr. and Mrs. S. G. Sims, and the following children; Prentiss, Doris, Melvin, Donis, and Dorothy Ann. The following brothers and sisters also survive; Fred, Roy and John Sims, Mrs. Mary Brower and Mrs. Winnie Goodson. Additional notes from Vol. 1, Calhoun County Cemetery Records, 2005: She was born Dec. 5, 1900, according to family information. Also a copy of this cemetery done in 1986 lists a marker no longer there which gives her name as Sammie G. Smith and her birthdate as Dec. 5, 1900. She was the daughter of Samuel Gholson Sims and his first wife nee Betty Ward. She was the wife of Ernest Marvin Smith, who was the son of James Ballard Smith and wife nee Emily Betterton. Additional information from the cemetery records state that Sammie's father's second wife was Mary Elizabeth Smith, the sister of her husband, Ernest Marvin Smith, thus making her sister-in-law also her step-mother.
