Albert was living in Granger, TX when he entered the service and was a member of Company G, 3rd Battalion, 7th Marines, 3rd Marine Division. Inchon Harbor Tragedy - January 21, 1954 On January 21, 1954, 24 Marines, two Navy corpsmen and two Koreans drowned in a tragic accident in Inchon Harbor of South Korea. U.S. Navy Landing Ship (LST456) collided with a smaller Army Landing Craft Medium (LCM5195), tossing 50 occupants into the icy waters. The LST was manned by Japanese seamen and the vessel was carrying 1000 anti-Communist Chinese soldiers who had been prisoners of war and taking them to Formosa (currently named Taiwan). The Marines were to provide security for them. The smaller boat was cut in two and rolled over, throwing the 50 passengers into the water. The Marines were mostly from Company H, 4th Marines, and were wearing combat packs, rifles, and heavy boots when they fell into the icy water. Many sank to the bottom of the harbor because of the heavy packs. Survivors and the dead were pulled from the water by rescue boats and native sampans. Survivors were taken to the hospital ship USS Consolation for treatment and recovery. 17 Marines, two Navy Corpsmen, two Army men, and one Korean were rescued. 5 bodies were recovered and the remaining 23 were carried away by the strong harbor current and not recovered. Al was one of those not recovered. (Sources: "Korean War Educator"; "New York Times" newspaper – 21 Jan. 1954, Thurs.)
