Alfred J. Schrad, 95 of Elgin, NE, passed away Wednesday, June 10, 2015 at the Golden Living Center in Neligh, NE. A Mass of Christian Burial will be 10:30 a.m. Monday, June 15, 2015 at St. Boniface Church in Elgin, NE, with Rev. Ross Burkhalter officiating. Interment will follow in the parish cemetery with military rites by American Legion Post 229 and VFW Post 5816 of Elgin, NE. Visitation will be 5:30-7:30 p.m. Sunday at the church with a 7:30 p.m. wake service. Alfred John Schrad, son of Joseph and Mary (Closter) Schrad, was born February 22, 1920 at Petersburg, NE. He attended school at Petersburg, NE and then worked as a farmhand for Henry and Bobbie Clemens. He entered the United States Army on June 5, 1942 and served during World War II, participating in multiple campaigns, before being honorably discharged on October 8, 1945. He returned home and resumed working for Clemens' while acquiring land to begin farming on his own. On March 27, 1951, Alfred married Josephine M. Salber at St. Boniface Church in Elgin. They lived on a farm southwest of Elgin where they raised their six children: Doris, Ron, Linda, Sue, Jan and Dan. They raised their family and farmed over 70 years on the same land. Alfred was a member of St. Boniface Church, Knights of Columbus, American Legion Post 229 and VFW Post 5816 of Elgin. He was an avid fisherman and loved to go camping. He is survived by five children: Ron (Carla) Schrad of Elgin; Linda (Randy) Mitchell of Elgin; Sue (Elliott) Castillo of Lincoln; Jan (Scott) Clausen of Norfolk; Dan (Sharon) Schrad of Omaha; 18 grandchildren and 11 great-grandchildren; three sisters-in-law: Vera (LaVern) Buelt of Hillsboro, OR; Gladys (Rollie) Reicks of Elgin; Betty Salber of Elgin; along with many nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends. Alfred was preceded in death by his wife; parents; daughter Doris Ping, son-in-law Mike Ping; one brother Wilfred; and five sisters: Esther, Lita, Ruth, LaRella, and Bernie.
