Charles, or Charlie, as he was often called, spent his childhood on a farm at Pearl, Coryell County, TX with his older brother, William and younger brother, Edwin, who was nicknamed Stump. They lived in a log cabin, built in the 1870's. His dad, Antony, farmed and raised live stock. Mother, Lizzie, was a wonderful example of an early 1900's homemaker, taking good care of her home and family. Lizzie died when Charles was 12, leaving his dad to complete the job of raising their three sons. Charles always spoke of his mother, Lottie Elizabeth Neyland, with great love and pride. She was sorely missed by her boys. Charlie and his brothers grew up on their farm, swimming in the Cowhouse Creek, along with hunting, fishing and enjoying the pleasures of country life. They went to school at Pearl. Dad actually told us stories about having to walk five miles to school. His Dad soon made arrangements for him to ride along with his teacher in her Model T. As a teen, he joined the CCC and learned to do plaster work. This may have led to his later pursuing a career in construction as a contractor and home builder. Charles was known for his good nature, fairness in his business and great pride in the work he produced. He did credit his Uncle Ben Karl with teaching him everything he knew about carpentry. After moving to Dallas, in 1942, Charles married Mary Edwina Cook. They had five children: Linda; Charles; Michael; Christopher and Susan.
