Charles Antony was the son of Joseph Charles Karl and Mary Ann Tolbert; husband of Lottie Elizabeth Neyland, and father of William Arthur, Charles Morteene and Edwin Dean Karl. He was called Antony by most who knew him. Antony and Lizzie, after marrying in 1908, lived first at Ireland, then at Pearl, Texas. They raised their sons in a log cabin on the historic Robinson Ranch. Part of the historic cabin dates to the 1870's. He instilled solid American values in his boys. Antony, or Dado, as many grandchildren called him, was always ready to help anyone in need. During the Depression, many travelers stopped at his home hoping for a good meal. Not only did they get the meal, they were always sent on their way with a towsack filled to the brim with food and supplies from his and his sons labors. He not only farmed, but harvested fruit from his trees, produce from his home garden, raised beef cattle and hogs which provided cured hams, bacon and pork for many hearty meals for friends, neighbors, and his growing boys. The high points of their year were the family gatherings at the ranch for Thanksgiving and Christmas, with family members often staying for weeks. Their holiday meal required that the men trap the family favorite - a possum for the holiday celebration. After Lizzie's death, Antony devoted his efforts to raising his sons, seeing to their education, and teaching them the skills which would serve them well for the rest of lives. WWII was approaching as his sons became adults and moved to the cities to find work. Two of those sons served in WWII. Antony moved to McGregor, Texas and found work in the munitions plant that had been established to supply the war effort. There he met and married Ellen Shaw. After the war ended, they spent the years until his death together in McGregor, many of those years serving the community from the Karl Laundry they had established. Antony was the respected patriarch of a large extended family. He initiated the Karl reunions at Gunderland Park, near Lampasas, in the 1940's. The fellowship, food, and fishing created many wonderful memories for the families attending. The reunions were held every year and would often last the entire week nearest to the 4th of July. They drew a large attendance each year until his death in 1967. Ironically, most of the family received news of his grave condition and passing while awaiting his arrival at the reunion, normally the happiest week of the year for him. Antony, a fine and caring man, will be sorely missed by all who knew and loved him.
