George J. Strmiska, Sr., 72, of Granger died Tuesday, March 4, 2003 at Brackenridge Hospital in Austin. Rosary will be recited at 7 PM, Thursday, March 6, 2003 at Providence Funeral Home in Taylor. Celebration of Life Mass will be at 10 AM, Friday at SS. Cyril & Methodius Catholic Church in Granger with Rev. Isidore Ndagizimana officiating. Burial will follow at Holy Cross Mausoleum, Granger. George J. Strmiska was born on February 5, 1931 to Joseph and Mary (Skrhak) Strmiska in Granger, Texas. He served his country during the Korean War where he earned the National Defense Service Medal and the Good Conduct Medal. On June 23, 1953, he married Mary Ann Knapek in Granger, Texas. He was a professional musician since the age of 14. George mastered the guitar and sax and he played throughout Texas until six months ago. In 1976, George and members of Vrazels Polka Band were selected to represent the Czech culture at the Smithsonian Institute in Washington DC. After 34 years, he retired in 1989 as the Chief of Payroll at the V.A. Center in Temple. George was a loving husband, father, and grandfather. He was a member of SS. Cyril & Methodious Catholic Church, VFW, Knights of Columbus and KJT. He was preceded in death by his parents, brother, Daniel and infant daughter, Eileen and infant son, John Michael. He is survived by his loving wife, Mary Ann Strmiska of Granger; seven sons, Pat Strmiska and wife, Velvet of Georgetown, Stephen Strmiska and wife, Linda of Pflugerville, Thomas Strmiska and wife, Cynthia of Buckholts, George J. Strmiska, Jr. and wife, Catherine of Granger, Joseph Strmiska and wife, Kisa of Granger, James Strmiska of Dublin, Ireland, Bernard Strmiska and wife, Laura of Hutto; one daughter, Therese Strmiska of Granger; three brothers, Frank Strmiska and wife, Margie, Jerry Strmiska and wife, Mary, all of Taylor and Clement Strmiska and wife, Nancy of Granger; three sisters, Georgie Drozd of Temple, Frances Steffek of Elgin and Geraldine Schneider and husband, Marvin of Bryan; 13 grandchildren, Aaron, Cody, Danita, Shane, Roxanna, Joseph, Matthew, Jessica, Zachary, Mallory, Nicholas, Cole, and Jacob ; 5 great grandchildren, B.J., Mackenzie, Morgan, Madysen, and Nathan; and numerous nieces and nephews.
