Joe B. Pekar, 89, of Granger went to be with the Lord on Monday, April 11, 2005 at Granger Villa Nursing Home. Recitation of the Holy Rosary will be 7:30 pm, Tuesday, April 12, 2005 at Providence Funeral Home in Taylor. Celebration of Life Mass will be 10 am, Wednesday at SS Cyril & Methodius Catholic Church in Granger. Entombment will follow at the Holy Cross Mausoleum in Granger. Pallbearers include Vince Marek, George Heger, John Pavelka, Mike Spacek, Gregory Pekar, David Pekar, Jr., Riley Pekar and Dillon Pekar. Honorary pallbearers include all members of the SS. Cyril & Methodius K of C, Bingo Crew, Senior Church Choir and the Granger Fire Department. Joe was the son of Joe and Hermina (Janak) Pekar. He was born on August 5, 1915 in Granger TX. Joe attended SS. Cyril & Methodius Catholic School and graduated from Granger High School in 1934. Before entering the military, Joe worked at the William Cameron Lumberyard for a number of years. On March 6, 1941 he volunteered for the Air Force serving at Randolph Field in San Antonio, TX. and at Foster Field in Victoria TX, as Staff Sergeant in 1942 at Coffeyville, KS. He trained at the Airplane Mechanics School in 1943; which provided training on B-25 Bombers. Earning $96 per month, Joe was able to ask for Judy s hand in marriage. After several transfers the war ended. On October 5, 1943, Joe married Judy Spacek in the St Joseph s Catholic Church near Dime Box, TX. Joe joined the US Post Office in Granger TX on October 1, 1946 as a substitute clerk position taking his father s place. He was a career Post Office Clerk in Granger until his retirement in July 1979 after 33 years of service. Joe was active with the American Legion, enabling the Granger Little League to become affiliated with the National Little League organization. Joe was the announcer for Granger High School football and local baseball games for many years. He was President of the (KD) Catholic Workman, the Senior Church Choir, Secretary of the Volunteer Fire Department, and was Financial Secretary for the Knights of Columbus for 20 years. In 1971, Joe became the "Bingo Caller" for Tuesday night games hosted for the community by the Knights of Columbus. Joe is preceded in death by his parents; one brother, Andrew; and three sisters, Hattie Blomdahl, Mary Ann Collins, and Henrietta Pekar. Joe is survived by his wife, Judith (Judy) Mae Pekar; three sons, Ronald and his wife, Linda, David, and Paul; one daughter, Rita Burdell and husband H. T. (Buddy); two brothers, Frank L. Pekar and wife Evelyn and Bernard A. Pekar and wife Marilyn; two sisters, Effie Skrhak and husband Joe and Hermina A. Gumm; five grandchildren, Kimberley Lyons, Analisa Pekar, David, Jr. (DJ), Riley, and Dillon Pekar; three great grandchildren, Kayla Vitek, Ariela Kuhlmann and Braden Pekar.
