Judith (Judy) Mae Pekar, 89, of Granger went to be with the Lord on Sunday, July 24, 2011, at Estrella Oaks Rehabilitation & Care Center in Georgetown. Celebration of Life Services are pending at SS. Cyril and Methodius Catholic Church in Granger & Providence Funeral Home in Taylor. Judy was 2nd of six children of Adolph and Johanna Zelenevitz Spacek, born in Dime Box, TX, on May 27, 1922 in a two-story home on the Spacek Estate at Old Dime Box. She attended school in New Dime Box, graduating on May 22, 1940. Throughout her school days, Judy was very active in the 4-H Club mentoring girls to develop their hands-on skills in sewing, quilting, gardening, preserving foods, and home economics. In 1937, Judy was one of 100 girls awarded a 4H Texas Gold Star Pin. Judy attended Durham's Business College in Houston TX and became an Executive Secretary in Temple TX in 1942 with Holland Page, the contractor that built McCloskey Hospital, now the VA Hospital. Her professional career included substitute teaching, secretarial and librarian positions in Granger at SS. Cyril and Methodius Catholic School, Granger High School, and the KJZT fraternal organization state office. On October 5, 1943, Judy married Joe B. Pekar in the old St. Joseph's Catholic Church in the Hranic Community near Dime Box. Joe served in the Army Air Force and was a career Post Office Clerk in Granger. Judy continued her interests in crafts, cultural activities, and religion through leadership roles in the Home Demonstration Club, Tuesday Study Club, KJZT, Mothers Club, and Parent Teachers Club. Judy served as President of St. Flora Altar Society for 44 years, caring and leading all aspects of the parish sanctuary. Following her Mother's footsteps, Judy devoted countless hours to the parish and school and was honored by fellow parishioners and the Diocese of Austin by receiving the Lumen Gentium award on June 6, 2007, symbolizing "the light of the world" which was exemplified by her extraordinary stewardship and leadership in the Church. Judy was preceded in death by her parents, her husband, one sister, Bernadette Reichle, two brothers, Sonny Spacek and Riney Spacek. She is survived by three sons, Ronald and his wife, Linda, of Georgetown, David of Granger, Paul and his wife, Barbara, of Georgetown, one daughter, Rita Burdell and husband H.T. (Buddy) of Greensboro, GA; one brother, Woodrow Spacek of Dime Box, one sister, Electra Koeniger of Litchfield Park, AZ., five grandchildren, seven great- grandchildren, and numerous Godchildren.
