Arvinia Jane (Montgomery) Cockerel Preston, the daughter of George Washington Montgomery and Rachel Snell Washburn, was born June 30,1860 in Kentucky. She was married to John Allen Cockerel, the son of John E. Cockriel and 3/w Annie Allen, on May 8, 1879 in Grayson County, Kentucky. At the time of the 1880 census they were living in Shrewsbury in Grayson County next door to his father, John and John's family by his 4/w Rhoda Turner. Father and son were doing business as dry goods merchants under the name of John Cockerel and Son. John Allen Cockerel died June 20, 1884 and was buried in the Shrewsbury Cemetery. He was survived by his widow Arvenia Jane Cockerel, his daughter Corda Novella, about three years old, and his son John Everett, about one year old. On February 2, 1889 Arvenia (Montgomery) Cockerill and William Riley Preston were married by Isaac M. Washburn in Grayson County. William died on July 16, 1894 and was buried in the Preston Cemetery in Shrewsbury, Grayson County, Kentucky. Arvenia died on September 18, 1909. She was buried as Arvenia C. Preston in the Shrewsbury Cemetery in Shrewsbury, Grayson County, Kentucky.
