On double marker with Rachel Lee Key (1856-1932) Thomas was born September 1848 in Georgia to Mariah Smith and Dr. Richard Childress Key. He married Rachael Lee, and they had twelve children: Abraham Pennington, James Henry, Catherine, Mary Lee, Zenobla, Lula Pearl, Walter Dewitt, Wesley Watts, Carrie Ella, Louis Edward, Charles Ashley, and Richard L.
