Bio

Dr. Henry A. Aschauer , 62, well known Springfield physician, died suddenly at his farm near Buffalo Hart at 11:30 p.m., April 10, 1944, as he hurried from his house to the barn which had been struck by lightning. Death was due to heart trouble. Lightning struck the barn at the height of the storm, which swept through central Illinois, flooding cellars and roads and blowing down a large number of trees. As flames broke out in the barn after lightning struck, Dr. Aschauer went to the barn lot, while Mrs. Aschauer phoned neighbors asking aid in putting out the flames. After making the calls, Mrs. Aschauer started to the barn and found her husband's body on the way. Neighbors, who began arriving shortly afterward, removed the body to the house and then extinguished the fire in the barn. The Kirlin and Egan ambulance was called from Springfield but, due to the heavy rain and muddy roads, did not arrive until after 4 o'clock. The ambulance became stuck in the mud some distance from the Aschauer home and was pulled out three different times by a team driven by Robert Cravens. Dr. Aschauer was born in Sangamon county, educated in the Springfield public schools and graduated from Purdue, Ind. medical college in 1906. The same year, he was licensed to practice in Illinois. For many years, he maintained an office at 407 South Seventh street. Two years ago, he moved to the Buffalo Hart farm but continued his medical practice in Springfield. Dr. Aschauer was a member of the Illinois Medical Association and the Sangamon County Medical Society, and the Knights of Columbus, Fourth degree, and the Elks. Surviving are his wife, Mrs. Eda Aschauer; two daughters, Mrs. Harold Buckholdt, of Seattle, Wash.; and Miss Edith, at home; three sons, Joseph, of Lake Springfield; George, of Racine, Wis.; and Henry, a naval air cadet at Pensacola, Fla.; three sisters, Mrs. Charles Wetterer, of Springfield; and Miss Bertha and Miss Marie Aschauer, of Springfield; two brothers, Charles, of Decatur; and Frank, of West Allis, Wis.; one granddaughter, Susan Aschauer, of Racine, Wis. Mrs. Aschauer is the former Eda Reisch. The remains were taken to Kirlin and Egan funeral home. Funeral services were held in Kirlin & Egan funeral home and in the Cathedral of the Immaculate Conception. Burial was in Calvary cemetery.
