Joel Wallace was Justice of the Peace in Blount Co., TN, 1790 and an ensign in the Washington County Militia in 1795. He served on the Grand Jury at almost every term of Court. For many years he was in charge of Black's Fort, an old Indian block house, with several men under him. Until 1792, this block house was located in what was then Knox Co. territory, but is now Blount Co. Black's Fort was named for Uriah Black, a pioneer settler in Tennessee, and was surrounded by land belonging to the Wallace Families. Joel was married 1st to Esther Houston and second to Rebecca Jones. The burial spot for Esther Houston was located directly behind the house and at this time was called Wallace Cemetery in a family plot on a little hill just back of the house above the big Seneca Springs about 3/4 mile south of Trinity, Morgan County, Alabama. (From Morgan County, Alabama Records Volume 105) The gravestone for them marked tone maker - JL their location in the Old Wallace burial ground since renamed to Lile cemetery is T5S R5w Sec 19. Joel was 80 years and 9 days old when he died; Rebecca was only 51 and Esther was 60.
