Bio

Geraldine (Gerri) Speirs, long time resident of Good Samaritan Society, Miller, died Friday, Aug. 31, 2007, at the age of 76. Memorial services will be held Wednesday, Sept. 5 at the United Methodist Church with the Rev. Dave Andrews officiating. Rembold Funeral Home of St. Lawrence is in charge of arrangements. Gerri was born to Cecil and Alice (Lillie) Smith on December 10, 1930 in Mitchell, S.D. The family moved to a farm south of Alpena, S.D. during WWII to farm with their uncle, Ben Smith. She attended school at Lane, S.D. Gerri married Keith Speirs on February 14, 1958 at the Methodist Church in Miller where they made their home. They had a daughter and son and Keith adopted her children. Gerri was active in the United Methodist Church, United Methodist Women and Faith Circle, was a Junior MYF leader, Sunday school and Bible school teacher, Brownie leader and Cub Scout den mother, a member of ARC (children with disabilities) and adviser to the Miller chapter of the Youth ARC, a member and past president of the American Legion Auxiliary, and was a great cook who loved to feed the neighborhood. She worked as a clerk, a waitress, and cook, and was part owner of a cafe in Miller at one time. She looked after lots of children and enjoyed neighborhood gatherings and card parties. She was disabled with multiple sclerosis for many years. Survivors include her husband Keith Speirs; her children, Dennis Lyftogt (Teri) of Danville, Calif., Stephen Speirs (LaDonna) of Yankton, Francine (Steve) Blair of Houston, Texas, Bill Speirs (friend Dianne) of Yankton, Cindy Arland (John) of Miller, and Kevin (Lori) Speirs of Rapid City; 13 grandchildren and 16 great-grandchildren; her mother, Alice Timm of Miller; sisters-in-law and brothers-in-law, DeLila Tompkins of Redfield, Mary Alice Downing of Miller, Lorraine Speirs of Rapid City, Blanche McClellan of Marienville, Pa., Kenneth Phillips of Lead, Laura Speirs of Vermillion, Dorothy and Leonard Fawcett of Ree Heights, Willis and Audrey Speirs of Dade City, Fla., Harriet Kopplin of Miller, and many nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her father, Cecil Smith, and step-father, Henry Timm; a sister, Elaine; brother-in-law, Jim Norton; a nephew, Mark Schroeder; an infant son, Gary Lee; and an infant granddaughter, Jill Suzanne Hunt; brothers and sisters-in-law, Eldon Tompkins, Waldo and Doris Speirs, Donald Downing, Leonard Speirs, Hugh McClellan, Florence Phillips, Glen Speirs, Gladys Speirs, Kenneth and Patti Speirs, Bob Brandhagen, and Lester Kopplin.
