United States Marine Corps, World War II, Veteran, Dr. Murrell Presley Stewart , 93 years of age, of Somerset, Kentucky, departed this life on Monday, March 9th, 2020 at his home. Dr. Stewart was born in Ruth, Kentucky on August 13th, 1926, son of the late Presley and Samantha Eva Alexander Stewart. He was a member of Flat Lick Baptist Church and Deacon and Sunday School Teacher at Flat Lick. He was a college professor at Eastern Kentucky University, a United States Marine Corps Veteran, where he proudly served his country during World War II, former Superintendent of the Pulaski County School System. He enjoyed teaching his college students, fishing, gardening when he was able, but most of all he enjoyed spending time with his family, especially his grandchildren and great-grandchildren. Dr. Stewart was survived by his loving wife of more than seventy years, Norma Pauline Price Stewart; one son, Larry (and Joyce) Stewart; one granddaughter, Daphne (and Jason) Tucker; four great-grandchildren, Colton Presley Tucker, Emily Kate Tucker, Lily June Tucker, and Kamryn Stewart; and a host of other family and friends who mourn his passing. He was preceded in death by his parents, Presley Stewart, who departed this life on January 23rd, 1962 and Eva Stewart, who departed this life on May 21st, 1954; one brother, Ferrell Stewart; five sisters, Sarah Hargis, Eva Murphy, Alma Mounca, Edna Miller, and Maxine Miller; and one grandson, Dr. Kyle Patrick Stewart. Visitations were held from 6:00 p.m. until 8:00 p.m. on Wednesday, March 11th, 2020 at the Southern Oaks Funeral Home in Somerset, Kentucky. Funeral services were held at 12:00 noon on Thursday, March 12th, 2020 in the Chapel of the Southern Oaks Funeral Home with Dr. Harold Brown and Rev. Gerald Ashley officiating. Military Honors were conducted by the American Legion Honor Guard Post#38. Burial followed in the Bobbitt Cemetery in Pulaski County, Kentucky. Obituary information curtesy of the funeral home.
