Josiah Juan Smith was the son of Jerome Smith and Margaret Turner Smith. He married Fannie Hassentine Gammon on 13 January 1908 in Brown County, Texas. To this union were born four children: Martha (Neattie) Ola, Harvey Lucian, Ina May, and Josiah Jerome.
