Virgil L. Martin, 80, of El Dorado died Sunday evening, June 13, 2004, at a local nursing home. Celebration of his life is scheduled for 2 p.m. Thursday, June 17, at Kirby-Morris Funeral Home. Interment will follow in Walnut Valley Memorial Park. He was born Jan. 13, 1924 in Mulvane, Kansas the son of John M. and Iva (Snyder) Martin. He grew up Mulvane and attended schools there. Virgil served his country in the U.S. Army during World War II. He obtained the rank of staff sergeant in the 161st Infantry, which was stationed the in the Philippines. Upon returning from his tour of duty, he moved to the El Dorado area and had lived here since. Virgil was united in marriage to Eunice Maxine Pierce on Aug. 26, 1949 here in El Dorado. He worked for Albert Hogoboom as a mechanic for more than 32 years, retiring in 1996. Virgil loved to work with his hands, especially on vehicles. If it had a motor, he could fix it. He also enjoyed working with wood, tinkering, and making wind chimes. He was a kind and loving man that was willing to help anyone who asked. He is survived by his wife, Maxine, of the home; three sons, Alen Martin and his wife Deborah of Benton, Clyde Martin and his wife Tina of El Dorado, and Terry Martin of Augusta; three daughters, Diana Martin, and Kathy Garner and her husband Jim, all of El Dorado, and Barbara Schoffstall and her husband Phillip of Anchorage, Alaska; three brothers, Vernon Martin of Sedan, Kan., Cliff Martin of Pampa, Texas, and Pete Martin of El Dorado; three sisters, Grace Wiltshire, Hazel McCoyne and Annette Moore, all of El Dorado; 13 grandchildren and eight great-grandchildren. A memorial has been established with the Hospice Care of Kansas. Contributions and condolences may be left with Kirby-Morris Funeral Home, which is assisting the family with these arrangements.
