Lawrence Locomotive (Lawrence, NE), Friday, October 28, 1949; pg. 1 Mertens - Karmazin In a double ring ceremony October 11, at 8:30 a.m. Miss Bernadine Mertens, daughter Mr. and Mrs. Chris B. Mertens of Lawrence became the bride of Willard Karmazin, son of Mr. and Mrs. Julius Karmazin also of Lawrence. The wedding vows preceded a Nuptial High Mass at Sacred Heart Church at Lawrence. Monsignor Haukap officiated at the rites and the Senior Church Choir sang the mass. The bride, given in marriage by her father, wore a gown of white slipper satin trimmed with a sheer yoke edged in Alenson lace and panels of lace in the skirt which fell in a long train. The long sleeves were petal pointed over the wrists. Tiny covered buttons trimmed the back .Her finger tip veil was of a wedding ring pearl design and was secured to a pearl crown. She wore a double strand of pearls and matching ear rings, a gift of the groom and carried a bouquet of white -pom poms and mums tied with white satin ribbon. Miss Marian Mertens, sister of the bride was maid of honor and wore a floor length gold satin gown which was trimmed with a pleated ruffle around a sheer yoke and short puffed sleeves. Her bridesmaids, Miss Loretta Karmazin, sister of the groom, and Miss Geraldine Buescher, a close friend, wore identical gowns of blue satin. They wore matching satin crownless hats and carried colonial bouquets. Their rhinestone necklaces and ear rings were gifts of the bride. The grooms attendants were his brother, Eugene Karmazin, and the bride's brother, Eugene Mertens. Usher were Leonard Karmazin, cousin of the groom and John Hlavac. All wore dark business suite and white carnation boutonniers (sic). The brides mother wore a black two piece suit dress with matching accessories and the grooms mother wore a dark green dress with brown accessories. Each wore a corsage of pink roses and carnations. A three-course dinner was served to 120 guests at the church parlor. The three-tiered wedding cake was baked by the grooms sister, Mrs. Bernard Svoboda. Miss Naomi Schlick was in charge of the guest book. Mrs. Bernard Svoboda and Mrs. Robert Karmazin were in charge of seating the guests. A dance was given in the evening by the newly weds at the Pariah Hall with Jack Thornes and a big crowd in attendance. For a wedding trip to the Great Lake Region, Mrs. Karmazin wore a navy suit with light blue accessories and a corsage of pom-poms. She is a graduate of Lawrence High School Class of '47 and was employed by Lincoln Benefit and Life Insurance in (NOTE: typed as in the newspaper). Mr. Karmazin, a graduate of Lawrence High, class of '44 is engaged in farming. The young couple are making their home on a farm 1 1/2 north of Nelson. Out of town guests were: Mr. and Mrs. Leo Mertenss and son of Cummingham, Kansas: Mr. and Mrs. Ben Hackman, Mr. and Mrs. Ed Maul and family, Joe Dusatko, John Vap, all of Hastings; Betty Ann Musenbrock and Naomi Schlickof Lincoln; Mr. and Mr. Eugene Schriener and family and Loretta Schrieter of Nebr. City; and Mr. and George Price of Edgar. ===================== Bernadine Elizabeth Karmazin, the daughter of Chris and Lena (Menke) Mertens, was born on March 14, 1929 in Lawrence, Nebraska. She passed away on October 12, 2019 at the Brodstone Memorial Hospital at Superior, Nebraska at the age of 90 years, 6 months, 28 days. Bernadine was baptized and confirmed at Sacred Heart Church, Lawrence. She attended Sacred Heart Parochial School and graduated from Lawrence High School and attended Lincoln School of Business. She was a 54-year member of Sacred Heart Church and Altar Society in Nelson. She was united in marriage to Willard Karmazin on October 11, 1949 at Sacred Heart Church in Lawrence. This union was blessed with 7 children. Bernadine was a homemaker and was also employed with the U.S. Postal Service. She enjoyed quilting and crocheting, especially doilies, and she collected Precious Moment figurines. She loved watching Husker football, volleyball and was always ready to play cards or dice games. She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband Willard on August 10, 2005; brothers Eugene and Ray Mertens, son-in-law David Livingston, sisters-in-law Naomi Mertens, Mildred Svoboda, Elsie Karmazin, Loretta Zigafoos, brothers-in-law Eugene Karmazin, Alan Zigafoos and Ben Svoboda. Survivors include her children Dan (Kathy) Karmazin of Norfolk, Nebraska; Carol (Stan) Fraas of Waverly, Nebraska; Joyce (Greg) Mitchell of Hastings, Nebraska; Laura Karmazin of Nelson, Nebraska; Mary (Raymond) Hansen of Gillette, Wyoming; Pam Livingston of Waverly, Nebraska; and Bruce (Steve Neely) Karmazin of St. Louis, Missouri; 11 grandchildren: Michelle Karmazin, Corey (Molly) Karmazin, Tara (Tim) Carlson, Stephen (Amy) Karmazin, Matt (Allison) Fraas, Jessica (Brian) Stilwagon, Scott Karmazin, Shauna (Tim) Carpenter, Eric Hansen (Mike Hill) Karma (Eric) Kolcun, and Karissa Livingston; 16 great grandchildren; sister, Marian Souchek of Lawrence, Nebraska; and in-laws Robert Karmazin of Hastings, Nebraska; Geraldine Karmazin of Superior; Nebraska; JoAnn Schneider of Hastings; Nebraska; Joanne Mertens of Hastings, Nebraska; and Betty Mertens of Sutton, Nebraska; nieces, nephews, other relatives and a host of friends.
