Bio Courtesy Peggy Bargen Duey (#46873059) Lawrence native, Raymond J. "Ray)" Mertens, passed away at his home in Sutton, Nebraska January 2, 2014. Ray was born November 1, 1933 in Lawrence, Nebraska to Christopher B. "Chris" and Magdalena "Lena" (Menke) Mertens. Ray attended Sacred Heart School, Larence, Nebraska and graduated from Lawrence (NE.) High School in 1951. On November 16, 1954, Ray married Elizabeth (Betty) Hajny at St. Mary's Church, Sutton, Nebraska. He served in the U.S. Army from January 26, 1954 to January 25, 1956. He also worked at the Naval Depot, Hastings, Nebraska to 1958. He worked for Sleep Farms and Ford Motor Company, Sutton, Nebraska for nine years until 1970 and then worked for Brown's Grocery Store until 1982. He then worked at Sutton Community Home, Sutton, Nebraska for three years, Hilty's Grocery, Geneva, Nebraska and Ray's Vac Shop for several years. Ray was preceded in death by: parents and brother, Gene Mertens. Ray is survived by: wife of almost 60 years, Betty Mertens of Sutton, Nebraska; daughter, Christine Wiard and son-in-law, Thomas Wiard of Gillette, Wyoming; son, Thomas J. and wife Kimberly Mertens of North Platte, Nebraska; seven grandchildren; two great grandchildren; sisters, Bernadine Karmazin and Marion Souchek and a host of family and friends.
