Denny Proffitt, 83, of Iredell, Texas passed away In Fort Worth, Texas, on Tuesday, October 8, 2019. Memorial funeral services will be held at 2:00 P.M., Saturday, November 2, 2019, at the Iredell High School gymnasium. Rev. Robyn Young will officiate. The Iredell Masonic Lodge will conduct Masonic Rites. On September 4, 1936, a son, Denny Harold Proffitt, was born to Raymond Hall and Ruby Appleby Proffitt in Carlton, Texas. Denny was a member of the First United Methodist Church of Iredell for over 50 years. He served in the U. S. Coast Guard and served as a Peace Officer. Mr. Proffitt served in the United States Coast Guard from February 20, 1955, until February 19, 1964. He served at many Ports, and among his favorites included Galveston, Texas, and Corpus Christi, Texas. After his service, he shared his love for the sea by spending many vacations in Galveston with his family. On September 23, 1962, Denny married Janis Gustafson in Fort Worth, Texas. The couple resided in Hurst, Texas, where he was employed as a Security Guard with Bell Helicopter before being recruited by the Fort Worth Police Department. The couple moved their family to Iredell, Texas, in 1969. In 1973, Mr. Proffitt opened the Proffitt Feed Mill in Iredell before returning to his law enforcement career in 1976. During his years in Iredell he served in many capacities. He served as City Mayor and Justice of the Peace as well as the Iredell Volunteer Fire Department and served as Chief for a period of time. He was also a member of the Iredell PTA . Mr. Proffitt spent many years Protecting and Serving the communities as a Peace Officer. Departments he served included Fort Worth PD, Abilene PD, and Tarrant County Sheriff Office. He served as Chief Deputy Sheriff of Bosque County before becoming Bosque County Sheriff. Mr. Proffitt was appointed as Bosque County Sheriff on July 21, 1984. Proffitt ran for Sheriff on November 6, 1984, and again on November 8, 1988, and was elected for two consecutive terms. After his retirement from Law Enforcement, Mr. Proffitt served as Chief of Security for Burns Security at Comanche Peak Electric Station in Glen Rose, Texas. He later retired to his home in Iredell. Mr. Proffitt was a past member of the Iredell Eastern Star Chapter along with his wife. They were members of the Iredell chapter for many years and served as Worthy Patron and Worthy Matron together for a term. He was a past member of the Karem Temple Shriners of Waco, Texas. He was a member of the Masonic Lodge for over 50 years. He held many offices with the Masons including: Jr. Steward, Jr. Deacon, Sr. Deacon, Jr. Warden, Sr. Warden, Secretary, and Chaplain. He also served as Worshipful Master for three terms. Mr. Proffitt also received the honor of serving as District Deputy Grand Master, District 68 from 2010-2011. He received his 50 years service award on August 6, 2012, and Golden Trowel Award in January, 2013. Mr. Proffitt is survived by his wife of 57 years, Janis Proffitt, of Iredell; daughter, Denise and husband, Dr. Wallace Glab, of Lubbock, son, Doug Proffitt and wife, Jill, of Belton, son, Rod Proffitt and wife, April, of Stephenville, daughter, Donna and husband, Steve Rhodes, of Carolina Beach, NC, son, Cole Proffitt and wife, Rita, of Iredell, and daughter, Sandy and husband, Jerry Pyburn, of Iredell. Sisters: Glenda Ann Sund, Linda Cipri and Diana Martin of Colorado; 19 grandchildren, 21 great-grandchildren, in-laws, and numerous nieces and nephews. Mr. Proffitt was preceded in death by his parents, Raymond Hall Proffitt and Ruby Appleby Toban; sister, Patsy Proffitt; brothers, Bobby Proffitt and Raymond H. "Junie" Proffitt, Jr. Denny Proffitt was a pillar of the community and a great provider and leader for his family and community. He will be greatly missed by his family and friends.
