Helen was born to Joseph A. and Ethel C Wesely (Fisher). She attended Cedar Bluffs High School and completed the 10th grade. On September 22, 1942, she married James "Jim" Charles Placek. Jim and Helen had three children: Dennis, Dorothy, and Patricia. Jim and Helen lost their son to cancer in 2002. Helen loved music and going to dances and that is where she met Jim. They started their life on a farm near Valparaiso, NE living with Jim's mother. In 1945 they moved to a farm near Morse Bluffs, Nebraska. They remained in Morse Bluffs until losing all their farming equipment to a fire and moving to Omaha, NE in 1957. After losing Jim in 2015, Helen entered Brighton Gardens Assisted Living and in 2018 Brighton Gardens Memory Care. Helen worked for Millard Public Schools in the cafeteria for 20 years. She loved cooking and baking and developed many friendships during their coffee breaks. After retiring from Millard, she made various craft items and sold them at local boutiques with Jim. She always said how hard it was to start out so young in marriage, become a homemaker, help with the farm, and raise her children. Helen always said her biggest accomplishment in life was her family who she loved so dearly. In her later years Helen suffered from dementia. It was very difficult for the family to witness all the stages she went through in her journey with the disease. They were thankful that on most days she would remember who they were.
