Bio

Anna, firstborn daughter of Joseph and Josephine (Capoun) Sabata at the age of 16, married John Matous on May 15, 1900 ( on John's birthday) at St. Anthony Catholic Church, Bruno, Nebraska. A musician played 'Ave Maria' for the wedding party traveling in a horse driven wooden cart enroute to the church. Somehow, the wagon tipped over and threw ALL the wedding party into the mud. Oh my! Two weeks after their wedding, John took his new bride, Anna back to her parents farm so John could get the corn crop planted. John had inherited his father's, Frank's land. At age 17, Anna gave birth to their firstborn, a healthy son. John and Anna we're blessed with eleven healthy children in their time in Nebraska. The couple were active members of the Saints Peter and Paul church located in Abie, Nebraska. The couple purchased 480 acres of farm land in Verona, ND for one dollar an acre around 1927. Their two story new home and barn was located on Hwy 1. The last eight children attended school in Verona as the first three had already married and or were in the service. The family were active members of St. Raphael's Catholic Church in Verona. The couple were taken to Valley City , ND by their priest to board the train in April, 1943 to Detroit, Michigan where they had sons waiting for them. The couple lived in Detroit until their death and are buried next to one another in Detroit. Submitted by author L. G.
