Son of Martin & Lillian (Kosinski) Furmanski. His father was killed during a tornado in 1926. His mother remarried and died in childbirth when Carl was 12. The children were then sent to live with various relatives. Carl joined the Army Air Corp in Denver, Colorado, on December 19, 1941. From Denver, he was stationed at Diggs Field, in Texas, Australia, and then was sent to New Guinea, in 1942, during World War II. He was stationed at Port Moresby, where he was assigned to repairing airplanes. From Port Moresby he was sent to Gusap, where he was attached to a flyer squadron that traveled on to Hillandia, and Biak. He returned to the United States, in 1944, where he was stationed in Walla Walla, Washington. A General then chose Carl and another sergeant for a secret mission for the United States Air Force involving Japanese water-proofed, rice paper balloons filled with hydrogen and carrying daisy cutter (antipersonnel) and incendiary (fire) bombs. Carl was honorably discharged from the service on July 15, 1945. In 1944 Carl was united in marriage to Dorothy Scharnow. In 1996, Carl married Margaret Magorien in Columbus, Nebraska. Carl was employed by the Justice Department in prison work at the three different prisons. His experiences in prison work included meeting infamous prisoners such as the Bird Man of Alcatraz, and Charles Manson. He then took the position of Chief of Labor Management Relations in Washington, D.C., in dispute resolution for the federal prison systems. He retired in 1971.
