She first married Ralph Edward Searcy on 25 June 1941 in Wharton County, Texas. They must have divorced because on 5 May 1951 she married John Clifford Gates in Matagorda County, Texas. They had one known child, a girl. Lydia Kopecky Gates, 88 of Bay City died November 13, 2003 in Bay City. She was born November 5, 1915 in Galveston, Texas to the late Vladislav L. Kopecky and Louise Vavrecka. She is survived by her husband; John C. Gates of Sugar Land, Tx. daughter; Rebecca Beard of Blessing, sister; Ollie Nedbalek of Houston, grandchildren; Iona Kay Wilder Calhoun and John C. Beard both of Blessing. Lydia was known for her paintings. She was a former student of Simon Michael of Rockport. These beautiful items of originality & beauty can be found in several businesses, doctor's offices, several homes, and various local places in Bay City. She was the former owner of the Yellow Cab Co., and was the first woman cab driver and cab business owner in Bay City. She taught Sunday School at Calvary Baptist Church and organized the Cradle Roll Department which gave enrollment certificates to all newborn babies and roses to their mothers. She also drove a transit bus system for school children which gave her the opportunity to witness to the children. She was in the following organizations Prep & Eva Graham Senior Center, Art Guild, Gyro Club at Calvary Baptist Church, Volunteer at Bay Villa, Seabreeze and Legacy Nursing Homes, and member of the Golden Ave Baptist Church. She was born in Galveston and the family moved to what is now known as El Maton. She worked in the El Maton post office and store with her mother Louise. The town of El Maton was originally called Kopecky Town, because her family and descendants all owned land there. She was a fine God-loving Christian. Her life was devoted to Christ and giving of herself to others. She always had a smile on her face, a gift in her hand and a word of encouragement. She will be missed by all her family and friends. The family will receive visitors at Taylor Bros. Funeral Home from 6:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. Monday. Graveside service will be held at 10:00 a.m. Tuesday at Hawley Cemetery. Arrangements by Taylor Bros.
