Bio

Born in Moravia, the daughter of James and Franz (Ottora) Coufal. Married John Smid on April 14, 1891 in Butler County, Nebr. by Rev. P. J. Koutek, Catholic priest. She was five when the family immigrated to the U.S. in 1872 and 12 when the 1880 census was taken. '''''''''''' The Banner-Press (David City, Nebr.), May 30, 1957, p. 2, col. 5 BRUNO Mrs. Katy Smid, 86, Dies May 19 Mrs. Katy Smid, 86, a life-time respected member of this community, died at the Schuyler Memorial Hospital on Sunday, May 19. Funeral services were held on Wednesday from Svoboda Funeral Home, Schuyler, with Rev. Patterson officiating. Marion Dlouhy sang two songs. Burial was in the Bruno National cemetery beside the grave of her husband. The pallbearers were Theodore Pecha, Theodore Coufal, John Kastl, Louis Polivka, Rudolph Polivka, Edward Smid. Katy Coufal was born in Czechoslovakia, and on coming to the United States her parents settled near Abie. She was married to John Smid In 1891, and they made their home on a farm near Bruno. Seven children were born to them including four sons, Edward of Seward, William, Robert and Ernest of Bruno. The daughters, Rosy, Emma Mrs. James Rech, and Olga, and their father, preceded Mrs. Smid in death. Mrs. Smid lived with her sons, Robert and Ernest, and kept house for them on the farm south of Bruno. She was a kindly, friendly woman, and devoted to her family. Mrs. William Smid’s father, Frank Dolezal of Bruno, also died within the past month.
