Elcanah Hogan's youngest son, James Marion Hogan, was my great grandfather. I had heard stories from my grandfather William Ross Hogan about how his father James Marion had killed a man and left his family when my grandfather was about 10 years old. There were lots of versions of this story, but all of them ended the same. James Marion Hogan left his wife with 5 small children at home in December 1904 and was never seen again. Several years ago, I was doing some research in Oklahoma City and I came across a newspaper article that said James Hogan had stabbed the brother of an Oklahoma City, assistant police chief and that the police officer was on his way to Catoosa, Oklahoma to see about his brother. The man who was stabbed lived, but James Marion never knew that. It seems he thought his entire life he had killed the man. Recently I was contacted by a cousin regarding our DNA match. With his memoirs written down from an interview with his grandmother, and the newspaper article's description of the stabbing being over a gift of a bible at Christmas, we were able to determine that James Franklin Smith and James Marion Hogan were the same person. James had at least 6 more children with Effie Minton and later told his children they had brothers and sisters out there, but never gave them enough information to find them. He also told someone he had killed a man over a bible at Christmas. James is buried in an unmarked grave next to a granddaughter who is also in an unmarked grave.
