Corporal Richards was a member of Company K, 3rd Battalion, 31st Infantry Regiment, 7th Infantry Division. He was listed as Missing in Action while fighting the enemy in North Korea on or about December 2, 1950. He was presumed dead on December 31, 1953. DOD records cite December 12, 1950, as date of loss, but due to the internal chaos within the unit due to high losses, it is impossible without eyewitness confirmation to have a specific date of actual loss. By December 12, 1950, the unit was in reserve in the Hamhung-Hungnam area. Born in Gandy, Logan County, Nebraska, son of Oma and Auzia Richards, both originally from Indiana. The 1930 and 1940 Census places his family at Stapleton Village, Logan County, Nebraska. He apparently enlisted in Belle Forche, South Dakota. In 1949 he was living in Butte, Montana. Awarded ★ Purple Heart ★ Combat Infantryman Badge ★ Korean Service Medal ★ United Nations Service Medal ★ National Defense Service Medal ★ Korean Presidential Unit Citation ★ Republic of Korea War Service Medal Details of the Battle: The Battle of Chosin Reservoir, also known as the Chosin Reservoir Campaign was a decisive battle in the Korean War. On 27 November, the Chinese Army surprised UN Forces at the Chosin Reservoir area. A brutal 17-day battle in freezing weather and rough terrain soon followed. In the period between 27 November and 13 December 1950, 30,000 United Nations troops were encircled and attacked by approximately 120,000 Chinese troops. The cold weather was accompanied by frozen ground, resulting in frostbite casualties, icy roads, and weapon malfunctions. In the end over 17,000 UN forces were killed or wounded or missing in action, or died of wounds. The Chinese suffered 3 times that amount. Contributor: Marvin Mann (46857060)
