Thomas “Tom” D. Nehls Sr., 53, of Grand Island, passed away Tuesday, Jan. 8, 2019, at Bryan Medical Center East in Lincoln with his family by his side. To honor Tom’s wishes cremation was chosen. All Faiths Funeral Home is entrusted with arrangements. Tom was born Nov. 24, 1965, at Grand Island, son of Leland and Virginia (Murphy) Nehls. He grew up in Grand Island and attended Northwest High School before joining the circus at age 16. Tom was a tinkerer and mechanic. He drove semi-trucks for many years, hauling anything from pigs to furniture. Tom never had a bad word to say about anyone, and always looked on the bright side. Tom was a beloved Papa; his family meant the world to him and he cherished all of the memories made. He is survived by the love of his life and mother of his children, Cynthia McCarthy; a daughter and son-in-law, Keisha and Patrick O’Neill of Grand Island; a son and daughter-in-law, J.T. and Kayla Nehls of Grand Island; seven grandchildren, Jerome, Sasha, Damion, Caine, Abel, Thomas and Elias; his mother, Virginia; brothers, Kenneth Todd Nehls and Troy Nehls sister, Tammy Beers; along with numerous extended family and friends. Tom was preceded in death by his father, and a daughter, Jessica Rose Nehls.
