Bio

Married 1872 Born Woodstock, Hamilton, Ontario, Canada From Ord Journal, December 20, 1928, page 1, transcribed by Linda Berney: Death Calls Prominent Valley County Pioneer - After an illness of about four years of heart trouble death relieved the sufferings of Mrs. Jos. Ptacnik at her home in Ord last Monday. Catherina Lukesh was born November 1, 1854, at Woodstock, Hamilton, Ontario, Canada. While yet a little girl she came with her parents to Dubuque, Iowa, and later to Spillville, Iowa, where on June 11, 1872, she was united in marriage to Joseph Ptacnik. In 1878, just a half century ago, the family moved to Valley county and took up a homestead in Geranium Township. Here they lived for forty years and went through the vicissitudes and hardships of pioneer days when means were scarce and the making making farm homes from raw land was in process. They were prosperous through the years and successful in their endeavors, at the same time gathering to themselves a circle of good friends who appreciated the sterling worth and kindly neighborliness of both Mrs. Ptacnik and her husband. Mrs. Ptacnik was the mother of thirteen children, ten of whom are living. These are Joseph, Jr., Frank, John, Albert, and William Ptacnik and Mesdames Anna Petska, Mary Lukesh, Emma Valasek, Frances Vodehnal and Tracie Vodehnal. Those who have preceded their mother in death are Marinka, who died in infancy, Katie Ptacnik and Mrs. Barbara Woracek. Besides her husband and her living children, Mrs. Ptacnik is survived by 43 grandchildren and five great-grandchildren as well as many other relatives and friends. In 1918 Mr. and Mrs. Ptacnik moved into Ord and the last ten years have been spent quietly and happily together. Last evening at 8:00 o'clock the friends of this good woman gathered at her home where the Rosary was said. Funeral services were held at the Catholic Church in Ord this morning at 10:00 o'clock. Burial was in the Geranium Catholic cemetery.
