Roman "Ski" Kapczynski, age 77, of Athens, Georgia, formerly of West, passed away Sunday, December 31, 2017. Memorial graveside services will be held 2:00 p.m. Friday, November 23, 2018 at St. Mary's Cemetery near West, with Msgr. Isidore Rozycki officiating. The family will host a reception at the Best Western Hotel in West following the service. Roman was born on December 16, 1940 the son of Vincent A. and Annie (Soukup) Kapczynski. He graduated from St. Mary's Elementary School in 1955, West High School in 1959 and attended North Texas State College. Roman enlisted in the United States Navy in November 1961. On July 14, 1962 he was united in marriage to LaVerne Lander in West. Roman was Honorably Discharged in November of 1967. He served as an aircraft mechanic on the USS Currituck (AV-7) in the Philippines, Vietnam, and Hawaii. He worked for Siemen Energy and Automation until he retired in 2003 and moved to Athens, GA later that same year. Roman is preceded in death by his parents; his in-laws, Ernest and Goldie Lander; his sisters, Annie Vrba and an infant, Cecilia; older brothers, Vincent F. and Raymond Kapszynski; brothers-in-law, Ermin Vrba and Charles Odle; and a sister-in-law, Linda Lander. Survivors include his beloved wife of 55 years, LaVerne Kapczynski of Athens, GA; a daughter, Annette Waddell and husband Mark of Pennington, NJ; a son, Darrell Kapczynski and wife Holly Sellers of Watkinsville, GA; grandchildren, Dylan and Mia Kapczynski of Watkinsville, GA; a brother, Benjamin Kapczynski and wife Jeanne (Scott) of West; sisters-in-law, Nora Jean (Recek) Kapczynski of Houston, Georgia (Kozlovsky) Kapczynski of McGregor, and Virginia (Lander) Odle of Bastrop; a brother-in-law, Elwood Lander of West; and many nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends.
