Bio

Roy C. Metzger was born July 4, 1898 ( note different date on gravestone) in Tyndall SD to William F. and Mary Carda Metzger. He graduated from Tyndall High School in 1916 and attended the University of South Dakota in Vermillion. Roy began a life long association with the movie theater business in Wagner, SD. At one time, he was closely associated with Paramount Theater Corporation and went to Hollywood for business meetings. For over 60 years he lived and worked in Winner where he ran the Pix and Ritz Theaters and later the Pix Drive-in. He headed the Ben Dak Corporation which had business interests in Nebraska and South Dakota. Roy was actively involved in the life of the Winner community and for many years headed the Labor Day Celebration in Winner. Many other organizations and people benefitted from his concern and generosity. He was especially helpful during the polio epidemic and also helped young people finance their education beyond high school. The people who received the help were the only ones who ever knew about it. For that it how Roy wanted it! Roy Metzger and Henri Hanson were united in marriage in 1937. They worked together in the theater business and were well known to the young people of the community as the theaters provided many jobs as well as entertainment. Since Henri's death, Roy continued to stay in his apartment assisted by Mary Backus. He is survived by a niece, Jeanne M. Travis, of Milford Iowa and four great-nieces and great-nephews. He was preceded in death by Henri in 1991, his parents, three brothers, a sister and one nephew.
