Packard was born February 19, 1942 to Woodrow and Mary (Roach) Packard in rural Custer County near Sargent, Nebraska. Fred attended a country school across from his home beginning at age four. He wouldn’t stay home so the teacher decided to start him early. He graduated high school from Loup County Public School in 1959. Upon graduation, Fred enlisted in the National Guard and served his country for six years. He received several sharp shooter awards for his abilities. After being honorably discharged, he returned to the farm in rural Loup County. Fred married Faye Koinzan on May 15, 1965. They made their home west of Burwell for 53 years. The couple was blessed with two children, Troy and Lynette. Fred spent many hours entertaining his only grandchild, Celie. He taught her to drive by steering around the hay bales in the field, let her play in the grease, helped her to build projects, change rake teeth and taught her to “sweep the shop” so she could pedal her tractor around. Fred served for several years on the ASCS Board, was a member of Legion Post #298, and was, previously, a member of the Lions Club. Fred enjoyed farming and ranching, his cattle, International tractors, driving around to see what needed to be done, tinkering in the shop, Husker sports and operating the Bobcat. Fred enjoyed spending time with friends, fishing, entertaining hunters and watching the progress of the Calamus Lake throughout the years. Fred is survived by his wife, Faye of Burwell; son Troy and wife Laura Packard of Burwell; daughter Lynette and husband Dwayne Fales of North Platte; granddaughter, Celie of Grand Island, numerous in-laws, nieces and nephews, cousins and friends. He is preceded in death by his parents, Woodrow and Mary Packard; his sister and brother in-law, Pat and Louie Neitfeld; and in-laws, John Koinzan and Mary Koinzan.
