My parents were Frank and Sophie Maresh Matcek. Their parents, Joseph and Frances Schweda Matcek, and Vince J. and Emily Mueller Maresh married after immigrating from Austria-Hungary (now Czechoslovakia) during early 1870's. Grandfather Matcek and family farmed near Providence community where my father, his brothers, and his sisters attended school. They had seven children. Grandfather Maresh and family settled in Frenstat community. After my parents married, they rented and later bought my Grandfather Matcek's farm. Being a widower, Grandpa lived with us all my childhood days.He subscribed to 2 Czech newspapers, and often read us interesting items, even before we attended school. He was a wonderful storyteller. On warm summer nights, we sat in the yard and he would tell us stories he remembered from his childhood days. Some were spine-tingling ghost stories. We would look up at the sky through the beautiful clear atmosphere, seeing the stars and moon and wonder what they were really like, never dreaming that man would someday walk on the moon! I, being the oldest child, had a problem attending school. Harmony School being too far to walk for a first-grader (about 3 miles away). Problem was solved by staying with my Aunt Francis Nelson in San Antonio (attending St. Gerards School my first year). The second year, my sister Frances (now Scarborough) and I walked together. We had some very interesting adventures on these walks. On our way we had to cross a railroad track, and having heard many tales about tramps and hobos walking the tracks, we would approach cautiously, and sneak a quick look to see if someone was coming. If so, we ran back, hid out untill he passed on down the tracks with his back to us. We then proceeded on our way. Our two-room schoolhouse was a wonderful adventure. Introduction to Music Sousa Marches. Red Seal Records, etc. I admired all my teachers, Miss Bernice Martin, Miss Alma Garrison, Grace Brown, and Miss Benson in Lyons. I attended Lyons High School 1927-28 and then entered Santa Rosa Nursing School in San Antonio, where after finishing nursing training, I married Elmer A. Mitchell (1905-1970). His parents were Joseph H. and Elvira Lee Odom Mitchell, from Smiley / Nixon Texas. Our one son, James E. Mitchell, attended Hot Wells School in San Antonio, then A & M University. Was in the Air Corps 5 years, then Real Estate. He married Bernadette Urbanovsky. They have 6 children. Lives at Dunlap Farms in New Braunfels. I have retired from nursing and live near them. Gardening is my hobby now. Pecans. - Leona Mitchell
