Daughter of James Hughes & Margarette Stephens. Wife of Charles W. McKinnis, married 1864. ∼ Married to John McKinnis January 12, 1864 in Clayton County, IA Suggested edit: The Gazette Cedar Rapids, IA Wednesday, May 26, 1937 Strawberry Point - Funeral services for Mrs. Jane McKinnis were conducted at the Christian Church 6 miles northeast of Strawberry Point Tuesday. As Catherine Jane Hughes, daughter of James and Margaret Hughes, she was born in Pennsylvania. She came to Iowa with her parents at 8 years of age. In 1864 she was married to Charles McKinnis. They left on their wedding trip in a covered wagon for California, and after more than 4 months of travel arrived at Donner Lake in the Sierra Nevada mountains, where they spent the winter. In 1865 they returned by the way of Sacramento through the Isthmus to NY and then back to IA where she had since lived. Mr. McKinnis died 40 years ago.
