Bio

Allen Clement Locklin died on August 12, 2018 with loved ones by his side. A celebration of his life will be held on Saturday, August 18, 2018 at First Presbyterian Church at 11:00 AM with Dr. Stuart Baskin officiating, preceded by a graveside service at 10:00 AM at Rose Hill Cemetery, under direction of Jackson's Burks Walker Tippit Funeral Home. Allen was born in Ballinger, TX on Dec. 27, 1929 to Clifford Eugene and Billy Louise Locklin. He was raised in Thorndale, Texas in his early childhood. After his parents passed, he was raised by his brother, Elmo, and his wife, Rene, and later moved to Corpus Christi, Texas. As a young boy shaped by the depression and the loss of his parents, he grew up very competitive, resourceful, and independent. He always had some kind of a job – from working in a bakery to being an electrician and a Christmas tree salesman. Allen was always thinking of new ways to make money. He graduated from Corpus Christi High and later joined the US Air Force and then the US Navy, where he was a weather man. After he served his country, Allen carried mail in Corpus where he was befriended by the McClain Family (specifically their 3 daughters). Mr. McClain was instrumental in helping him get a scholarship to the University of Texas. Allen worked his way through college by waiting tables in Littlefield Freshman Dorm for Girls and taking on multiple other jobs. He was a member of the honors society for Geology Majors and pledged Pi Kappa Alpha as a senior, where he served as Pledge Class President. He received a Bachelor of Science in Geology Degree in 1954. That same year, Allen met the love of his life, Nancy Summers, at a dorm dance and they married shortly after. Allen moved to Mexia, Texas as a newlywed to surface map Limestone County for Humble Oil Company. He was transferred to Tyler, Texas two years later. He raised his family there and formed Ridley & Locklin Oil Company with his good friend, Wade Ridley. They later became independent of each other. He was well respected in his field and was a founding member of the Energy Minerals Division of the American Association of Petroleum Geologists. The East Texas Geological Society presented Allen with the Pioneer Award in 1993. Outside of his work, Allen was involved in many other organizations and started the National Vitiligo Foundation in 1985. Allen promised Nancy they would see the world together and he delivered on that promise, taking her to all 50 states and a number of other countries in their lifetime. He was an avid collector and loved searching for additions to his nutcracker, marble, and toy car collections. Allen had a great sense of humor and often did standup comedy monologues with his friend, Bob Dobbs. He was very generous, but also very frugal. His work ethic was incomparable. Allen was a Christ follower. He helped start Pollard Methodist and taught Sunday School there. He served as deacon and trustee for First Presbyterian Church. Until his health failed, he never missed a church service somewhere – somehow. Allen was a man of integrity and honor. He was always a man of his word and trusted by all. He treasured his children, grand children, and all of the great grands. Allen will be greatly missed by his friends, his loving wife of 64 years, Nancy Locklin, son, Chris Locklin and wife Lisa of Houston, and daughter, Lee Ann Loggins and husband Les of Tyler. He was loved by his grandchildren, Lindsey Harrison and husband Michael of Tyler, Claire Harwood of Tyler, Macy Middleton and husband Mayes of Wallisville, Alyson Locklin of Houston, Ross Locklin of Houston, Blythe and Clay McCain of Tyler, Courtney and Luke Loggins of Tyler, and Lucy Loggins of Nashville. He had 12 Great Grandchildren, who he adored, and he considered Bernie and Cecil Ward and their children his family. The love and care given to Allen by his caregivers, Esther Milton, Ronnie Calloway, and Greg Rushing was unsurpassed and will always be cherished by his family.
